Some reflections on the war in Ukraine. An interview with Tudor Petcu by Nanuka Tchkuaseli
1. What does Romania think about this war?
Romania is a NATO member, so our country could never accept such a war. As a matter of fact, Romanian politics are trying to help Ukraine in different ways possible, considering that this war shouldn't ever took place. The presidential declarations are always focused on the necessity of peace and of finding a solutions in order to stop this war as soon as possible. Of course, Romania can't do big deal because Ukraine isn't a state member of NATO, nor of EU, but at least, shows empathy and friendship in these terrible times in which Ukrainians are living.
2. You are neighbors, what is the situation in Romania now. How does the government react ?
Romanians are hosting now a lot of refugees coming from Ukraine, as it is normal and our country will still offer all kinds of help as long as it will be necessary. We understand very well the situation, the Governement tells always us to be careful but not to be afraid. And, yes, we shouldn't be afraid, although we should be prepared for any kind of situation because it never knows. But in spite of this fact, we are thinking about peace because the war isn't and will be never necessary and, as I already emphasized, we will always help Ukrainians in the best way possible.

3. What can you tell us about civic activities. What is being done in Romania to support Ukraine ?
Honnestly, there are lot of protests in Romania against Putin's regime. As for example, last week, I guess on Saturday, a Romanian citizen reacted in an interesting way, if I can call it like that, in front of Russian Embassy in Bucharest. He puted a red souce as if it was a blood, on the portrait of Vladimir Putin in order to show that Romanians are against this war.
On the other hand, there is in Romania a huge empathy for Ukraine. Different Romanian foundations are collecting funds to help the refugees and, not least, a lot of food and clothes are sent to these refugees. I shouldn't forget the educational sistem too, because our Romanian schools, in different regions of the country and even in Bucharest, are open for Ukrainian children because the must continue their studies, no matter the political context.
4. What do you think will be the consequences of this war for the world?
A war has never had and will never have positive consequences. Think about World War II, what happened in Germany and especially in Eastern Europe? The problem is that mankind has never learnt the lessons of histoy in order to understand that peace and tollerence are the main social aspects we need if we want to live in a better world. I don't want to judge anybody, but all I want to say is that we should be aware of the fact that these times in which are living are already a consequence of our behaviour in the past.
Anyway, I hope the situation will be better in the very next future and that we won't must to be witnesses of a nuclear war. I just want to think about peaceful times and maybe this war -wich I hope to end very soon- will make us understand once and forever the necessity of a good understanding among people.
5. What is your position as an individual citizen?
I have always been and I will always be against any war. No one has the right to take someone's life considering that he is acting like that for his own country. Over the years, I have done a number of interviews with Holocaust survivors or Rwanda Geonocide survivors and, talking to them, I realized that the Earth belongs to everyone, not to Chinese or to Russians. But this Earth belongs to us because we have to protect it, not to destroy it through wars using different weapons, especially the nuclear ones.
So, I am totally agains this war in Ukraine, I am standing with Ukraine but, on the other hand, we should avoid the hate against Russian people because there are lot of Russians who make protests in Moscow or Sankt Petersburg, considering that the war must end right now. And, not least, we shouldn't forget what a Russian wrote on a paper: "Sorry that I am a Russian". I think this is an exemple that should be
